Case Study
From Failing Grade 12 Math to A+ in University Calculus
Introduction
When Kaitlyn's mother contacted Maslin Academy in early Grade 12, she told us about her daughter. Kaitlyn was a very hard working student that went through a difficult last few years and let her math grades slip to the point where she was currently failing Advanced Functions.
She was quiet, stressed, and convinced she “just wasn't a math person.” She never had amazing results and did not know what to do.
For the previous two years she had taken math online, barely submitted assignments, and somehow walked away with marks in the high 80s. The problem?
Zero real understanding. Everything she thought she knew was smoke.
Her goal when she came to us: “I just need to pass so I can graduate.”
We listened… then gently pushed: “What if we aim higher? What if I told you that you can not just get good marks but learn how to learn math entirely on your own before university?”
Discovery
What the Gap Analysis Revealed
In one 90-minute session we discovered:
- Knowledge gaps that started in Grade 8 (basic algebra and number skills were non-existent)
- Two full years of “learning” that never actually happened
- No note-taking system, no error analysis, massive test anxiety, and a habit of giving up the moment a question felt hard
- She had to survive two Grade 12 math courses that year (Advanced Functions + Calculus & Vectors) while fixing four years of missing foundations
Most programs would have panicked. It was later revealed that they previously approached another agency and their solution was to drop math and try again next year after a catch up year. They gave up on Kaitlyn. We didn't.
Solution
The Plan We Built (100% Driven by Her Gap Analysis Data)
- Prioritized the highest-leverage gaps first (we literally ranked every missing topic by how much it was hurting her current courses)
- Created a colour-coded master schedule that wove old gap-closing with new Grade 12 material – so she never fell behind at school
- Provided her with a weekly milestones schedule to ensure we could be on track with all the simultaneous chaos.
- Rebuilt her learning habits from the ground up: active note-taking, deliberate practice, weekly error-log reviews and proper schedule regulation.
- Chose the perfect tutor match (someone ready to jump in hands on and be there for Kaitlyn. This is not an easy task and we need the perfect relationship between the tutor and the student in place for this type of challenge)
Results
By the end of Grade 12, Kaitlyn's transformation was undeniable. In Advanced Functions, she went from failing to earning an 86% final mark. In Calculus & Vectors, she achieved 92%.
But the real test came next.
That September, Sarah started at the University of Ottawa and thrived. Her first semester report showed Calculus I (MAT 1320) with an A+ and Linear Algebra (MAT 1341) with an A-.
She didn't just pass her high school courses; she built the foundation to excel at the university level.
“I walked into the exam hall and for the first time in a math class, I was not nervous. I actually knew I was going to crush it. That has never happened to me before in math. Thank you for believing I could do this when I didn’t.”- Kaitlyn
